{December 11, 2014} {UtopYA Con 2015} Millennium Maxwell House Information – Restaurants

Last week, Jo Michael’s talked about the Millennium Maxwell House in Nashville on her blog, giving specifics about the hotel, room sizes, and how to book for the UtopYA June 18-21 conference in 2015! So, this week, I’m going to follow up with some information about the restaurants inside the hotel, because, if you’re like me–flying in–then you may have limited options in terms of leaving the hotel for foods. And that’s okay, because Millennium Maxwell House has two awesome restaurants—Pralines and Maxwell’s Lounge. (I tried to get menus, but that was a bust, so sorry.)

First, let’s talk about Maxwell’s Lounge, because in my opinion, that’s where it’s at.

Last year, I spent every evening here, sipping the specially crafted drink made JUST for the con, meeting and greeting friends and author idols, eating the BEST quesadillas, and all around having a good time. Especially for the costumed Karaoke… yeah, that happened. And it’ll happen again this year, so make sure you bring a costume and get suited up! (You don’t HAVE to wear a costume, or sing, but we’d love to see you all dressed up). And the food here… well, it’s definitely delectable! I really, really enjoyed it! The service was fast, and the atmosphere is definitely welcoming, if a bit small. But we’re a rowdy bunch, and we make room for everyone. So make sure you come on down and join the fun!

Maxwell’s Lounge is the perfect setting in which to unwind after a day spent exploring the many delights that Nashville has to offer. As one of the livelier bars in Nashville, TN, Maxwell’s Lounge hosts entertainment every night of the week.

Live bands regularly perform country, blues and alt-rock numbers while patrons socialize and enjoy a drink or two at the bar. Good food is also available, with the menu featuring a number of classic Southern dishes. All in all, this Nashville lounge is a great venue in which to enjoy a memorable night’s entertainment.

And then there’s Pralines.

This is more of a traditional sit down style restaurant than Maxwell’s Lounge (though you can certainly sit down and relax in Maxwell’s), and the buffet and food here is just as good—same kitchen as Maxwell’s Lounge—but I found it to be just a little small for our 700+ group. Hence, the wait for lunch was generally a bit long, and cramped. BUT—that just means planning on my part next year. Instead of trying to eat lunch during the lunch rush, I’m either going early or late. Since Pralines is open from 6am-10pm, there is plenty of time to get in, unlike Maxwell’s Lounge, which is only open in the afternoon to late evening. So plan accordingly!

Excerpt: From Noah’s POV

“Did you fall into some paint, Echo?” Isaiah asks, changing the subject.

Echo’s shoulder slumps as she pivots toward the mirror. She groans as she touches her cheek and forehead that are more red and pink than skin. “Dang it. Why am I such a mess?”

“I think it’s sexy as hell,” I say.

“I think I’m going to barf,” Beth mocks my tone.

Death radiates from the look I send her way. Enough that it should melt her. “Ever sleep in a tent, Beth?”

Beth focuses on the screen while raising her middle finger in my direction.

“Screw it.” Echo turns away from the mirror. “I need a shower.”

I smile, Echo blushes, then I laugh. Damn me for inviting Isaiah and Beth to share our room.

“Anyhow.” An excited glint strikes Echo’s eyes. “Are you ready? I hope you like it. It’s sort of…for you. But it’s not done, okay? I mean, something like this would actually take a while to perfect, so I guess I’m saying—”

“Echo.”

“Yeah?”

“It’s all good.”

“Okay.” Her fingers drum nervously over the top of the canvas before she repeats, “Okay.”

“I’m assuming that’s not the constellation Aires?”

“No. I’ll have to start on that tomorrow.” With a deep inhale, Echo pulls out a chair from the table and rests the painting on the arms and leans it against the back so it will stay upright.

Air rushes out of my body, and I sink onto our bed. It’s the same damned shock as when she drew my parents this past spring. There’s awe and joy and this ache that hits deep in my gut. I bend forward and rest my joint hands on my knees and stare at the sight in front of me.

Fuck me, my eyes burn. I shut them, attempting to get my shit together. It’s a painting. Only a painting. I reopen them, and it’s the same disorientation as a right hook to the head. It’s more than a painting, and that’s the reason my throat swells.

Last night meant as much to me as it did to her and she painted it, capturing it in a way unique to Echo. She’s right, it’s not done. It’s a skeleton compared to her other work, but I see enough to know what she desires, what she plans to design. Up close all those colors would look like chaos, but when viewed as a whole it creates this beautiful picture. In the end, that’s the best way to describe me and Echo, our relationship. Our love.

The bed dips as Echo eases onto it, settles behind me and props her chin on my shoulder. Her signature scent that reminds me of walking into a bakery becomes an invisible blanket surrounding me. “What do you think?”

“It’s us,” I whisper, and knots form in my stomach. Echo always finds a way to blow my mind. She tenses behind me and I continue, “It’s where we spent last night.”

“It is.” Echo relaxes, and her fingers curl around my biceps. “Do you like it?”

Struggling for composure, I place my hand over hers and pause. “It’s…”

I’m not Echo. I don’t have words for what happens inside me. If I did, I’d fail at describing this. I shift to rest my forehead against hers. “I don’t deserve you.”

“That’s my statement,” she says so only I can hear. “I wish we were alone again.”

I press my lips to hers, slide my hand through her hair and watch as the curls bounce back into place. “Me, too.”

{December 2, 2014} {ARC Review} God’s Formula by James LePore and Carlos Davis

James LePore and Carlos Davis are back with another riveting tale of espionage surrounding Nazi Germany and Tolkien’s famous novel, The Hobbit. If you’ve read No Dawn for Men, then you already know God’s Formula is going to be a riveting read. And riveting it is—told in chapter format specific to date and time, readers are whisked away to Germany, the United States, England, and beyond as we follow multiple characters through the pages, intertwining with their stories until they collide, leaving us breathless in anticipation as the plot thickens.

I truly love how this story builds suspense; jumping from character to character, situation to situation always leaves me on pins and needles, and I thought it was extremely easy to keep track of all the characters, since LePore and Davis do such a wonderful job fleshing them all out and making them realistic in my mind. The fact that the novel is peppered with real people—real famous people—such as Einstein, Tolkien, and Fleming also adds a bit of fun to it all, dire circumstances and all.

And while God’s Formula does bring together some old favorites from No Dawn for Men, God’s Formula is more of a companion novel, and not a sequel; it can definitely be read as a standalone if you so choose. Though I really do suggest reading both novels because they’re both absolutely intriguing, especially as they combine fact with fiction, leaving readers pondering the aged old question, “what if…” As the final chapter in The Hobbit saga readies for release in the theatric world, now is the perfect time to pick up God’s Formula and see how masterfully LePore and Davis weave fact and fiction together. Four stars.
