Books: The Cheapest Vacation You Can Buy

Christina Daley has been extremely gracious in stopping by the blog today to answer some questions about her books, as well as give away either Seranfyll or Eligere in paperback form (or both) to one lucky winner!  So, without further ado, I give you Christina Daley!

___________________________________________________________

Hi everyone! Glad to be here, and thanks so much to Shana for letting me commandeer her blog today :)

Since Seranfyll’s release last year, and its sequel Eligere this year, I’ve gotten some recurring questions. Like, “How do you say Seranfyll?” Or, “Where do you get your ideas?” Or, “Is there a ‘real’ Domrey somewhere?” I always have fun answering questions because I love chatting with readers. Y’all are pretty fantastic!

So, here’s a little “behind the scenes” for some of the inspirations in my books:

The Cleaning Things – In Seranfyll, Rain encounters some mops, brooms, and buckets that magically move about on their own. I borrowed that idea from Disney, but I included them because I don’t like cleaning floors or dusting. I don’t mind scrubbing the bathroom or doing laundry and dishes. But dusting, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming are the bane of my existence.

Coal’s Ethnicity – I describe Coal as having dark skin and hair, and some have asked if he’s black or another ethnicity. And the answer is he’s neither, since our countries don’t exist in the world of Seranfyll. But if I had to liken him to a people group in our world, then he would probably resemble an Indian or other South Asian with very dark skin. Dark-skinned people resembling Africans or aboriginal Australians show up Eligere, and a bunch of different ethnic groups appear in the third book, which I’m working on now.

Domrey’s Bear – Despitebeing a grown man, Domrey has an enviable collection of toys in his room. One, a yellow bear, has significance. I won’t go into details and spoil it for those who haven’t read the book yet, but I had a yellow teddy bear like that. He doesn’t need a key like the one in the book, but he’s real, and he’s currently in my niece’splayroom at my parents’ house.

The Rube Goldberg Machine – In addition to the bear (and other things), Domrey has an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine in his room. But I couldn’t call it that because Reuben Goldberg wasn’t born until 1883, and Seranfyll is set in the 15- to 1600s. So, I don’t call it anything. However, if you were wondering what it was, then that’s what it’s supposed to be.

Amyrania’s Rainy Season – If you’ve made it to Eligere, then you know that the lead characters go to Amyrania during the rainy season. When I was writing this last year, we were in the middle of the hottest summer in Texas, with record three-digit temperatures and Stage 2 and 3 water restrictions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We had it good compared to some counties that were restricted from even running their showers and washing machines. Suffice it to say, it was hot, and I wanted to be somewhere with lots of rain and cooler temperatures. So, I gave Amyrania a rainy season.

Ironically, as I write this, D/FW is once again experiencingsearing temperatures and water restrictions.

A “Real”Domrey – I’ve mentioned in previous interviews that some of Domrey’s character is based on the eccentric British MP William Wilberforce. He also has a little bit of Howl from Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle. But the biggest inspiration for Domrey is someone whom shall remain a secret :) For now, at least.

Thanks again Shana! And good luck to everyone in the giveaway!

– Christina

From Goodreads: Theo woke severely injured, covered in blood, and missing ten years of her life.

Just to complicate matters further, Theo was born under a prophecy; one that has rabid followers with three different interpretations, all of whom are willing to sacrifice her in order to fulfill it.

Not knowing if she can trust the stranger she’s betrothed to, the warrior visiting her dreams, or even her own mother, Theo tries to piece together her past only to find that her present is far more dangerous.

It’s the power of her own blood that scares her most of all. This is a responsibility Theo never wanted, and a destiny she cannot deny, “All because of a prophecy she was trying not to believe in, but kept fulfilling.”

__________________________________________________________

Imagine waking up 10 years in the future, not knowing what happened to you, why it happened, or who you can trust in your new life.  Your mother is distant, you have few friends, and you find that you have some strange powers that scare many people, including yourself. All recollections of the past are gone, and you’re starting over.  Just imagine.

Theo isn’t only imagining this; she’s living it.  As scary as it is, Theo is a strong female lead character, attempting to find herself and understand the truth about her family—prophecy included.  As she begins to get her memories back, and learns from her friends and “lovers” what she’s capable of, Theo becomes a self-assertive young woman set on doing what’s right and protecting those she loves, regardless of the costs.

This is a fairly fast-paced novel, moving very quickly and endearing the characters to the reader’s heart as it unfolds.  I truly enjoyed all the characters, even Theo’s mother (after a while), and found the entire premise of this novel to be quite unique and very interesting.  Though a cliffhanger is in tow, I didn’t feel like it left me hanging in such a way that I was dissatisfied, and I believe that lovers of science fiction and fantasy will really enjoy this novel.  Four stars.

I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Today, I’m very excited to take part in Stephen Zimmer’s 48 day blog tour for his latest release, Spirit of Fire, the third title in the Fires in Eden Series, following Crown of Vengeance and Dream of Legends!  And, we have a special treat for you–an epic giveaway!!!  Two winners will recieve a total of 6 ebooks (3 novels and 3 short stories), and two runners up will receive three short stories.  These short stories are also associated with the epic fantasy series, called the Chronicles of Ave!

About Spirit of Fire:

A maelstrom of war engulfs lands resisting the designs of the Unifier to bring about a new order, of a kind that has never existed within Ave.  Battered by a massive invasion force from Gallea, the tribal people of the Five Realms and their Midragardan allies are being driven eastward, towards the sea, while the Saxan lines are wearing down ever thinner on the Plains of Athelney.

Time is running out quickly, as an ancient creature of legend soars through the skies with a brave young Saxan.   They carry the desperate hopes of two realms sorely beset by a voracious enemy.

Diabolic entities conduct a great hunt, as a malignant darkness deepens across all of Ave.  Exiles from another world must gain refuge, or find themselves ensnared by the long reach of the Unifier.  The very nature of creation itself stands in the balance.

It is a time when the honor and fortitude of many are put to the test, and terrible prices are paid for resisting great evils.  It is also a time of awakening for many, old and young alike, some of whom may yet discover the spirit of fire that lies within.

The third installment in the Fires in Eden series, Spirit of Fire is richly imagined epic fantasy with a diverse ensemble of characters that offers a new world to explore for readers who enjoy large-scale tales along the likes of George R.R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson, Steven Erikson, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Interested?  Of course!  So don’t delay, check out what you can win and enter now:

Two winners will receive a full ebook giveaway pack, which includes:

  • Crown of Vengeance (novel)
  • Dream of Legends (novel)
  • Spirit of Fire (novel)
  • “Into Glory Ride” (short story)

WordPress does not support any type of java script, so I’ve found, and that makes running giveaways using Rafflecopter difficult.  But I really want to use this new giveaway form!  So, I’m testing it.  That’s right, I’ve made a Rafflecopter giveaway, and I’m running it between this blog and another (which I’ve made just for my rafflecopter giveaways–if this works).  And I need you to test it out.  Hence, I’m giving away a paperback copy of Sophie and Carter, by Chelsea Fine (which I adore), to one lucky winner for helping me figure out if I can indeed use Rafflecopter, instead of google docs, to run my giveaways.
Here goes nothing…
_____________________________________________________________
Synopsis:
While other high school seniors are dreaming about their futures, Sophie and Carter are just trying to make it through each day. Carter is overwhelmed by issues at home as he struggles to support his mother. Meanwhile, next door neighbor Sophie is left to care for her three younger siblings in place of their absent and troubled mother. All that holds these two best friends together is each other, and knowing that each night they’ll sit together on Sophie’s front porch swing and escape from their troubles, if just for awhile. But as their relationship reaches a turning point and high school graduation nears, what lies ahead for Sophie and Carter?

Thanks for all the support and follows via email subscription, Twitter, Facebook, and Goodreads over the last year-and-a-half! I took my usual perch outside the auditorium, hoping today would finally be the day that she came walking by from the student parking lot. You would think after staking out this spot for the past three weeks, I would have been more prepared when she appeared. Instead, I nearly knocked myself out when I smacked my head on a tree branch trying to duck out of sight. My heart was suddenly racing, and I could feel the sweat beading on my now throbbing forehead. I couldn’t believe how good she looked, or how I couldn’t get this chick out of my mind. My friends would absolutely hammer me if they knew how I really felt about her. Like I was some kind of wuss the way I sneaked around just watching her.

I played it cool, keeping a safe distance between us as she made her way to her locker. I wish I had the guts to actually walk up to her and say something, but there was no way in hell that would happen, especially, after she became surrounded by Lacey and the others who passed her around from one hug to the next. Of course, that tool Colton was also there, wrapping her tightly in his arms. Seeing them made me feel like kind of a jerk for believing I might ever have a place in her life, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away as they strolled down the hall together.

From Goodreads: Sixty years ago, Abe Griffin saved the world and gained eternal youth.

Or so he thought.

Now, a man that Abe thought long dead is killing the surviving members of Abe’s old squad in order to reclaim the relics that they have kept hidden for decades.

The relics form an ancient beacon that must never be used, in a ritual that must never be completed. But the end of the world requires more than just activating the beacon.

It requires Abe.

With help from the granddaughter of his oldest friend, Abe must learn the truth about his immortal body, while at the same time trying to stop a horrifying series of supernatural opponents from sweeping away everything that he cares about.

________________________________________________________

I really enjoyed this novel; from start to finish, Langlois takes the reader on a breathtaking roller coaster ride, battling evil in its most heinous form as it attempts to take over the world, one town at a time.  Abe Griffin is an amazing character, and I really enjoyed his depth and perception as he attempts to restore peace to the world, save his squad and, once again, all of humanity.

This story begins with Abe, an elderly man trapped in that of a 30 year olds body, never aging, contemplating suicide after the death of his wife.  Having severed all ties, he’s ready to take the next step toward eternal rest, but the world has other plans for Abe, and when the granddaughter of one of Abe’s surviving comrades comes calling, he is quickly sucked back into a world he gave up on long ago.

This fast-paced read is extremely gripping and hard to put down once started.  There is a feel of constant danger all around as the main characters, Abe and Anne, settle themselves to fight against the “bait bags,” relatively normal looking humans filled with worms, given superhuman strength, and evil to the core.  While the descriptions of these enemies are indeed disgusting, they are the perfect enemy, and as Abe and Anne put two and two together, figuring out the source of these grotesque enemies intent on destroying them and all mankind, the story comes sharply into focus.  I really enjoyed this novel and was especially intrigued by the story behind Abe’s immortality and lack of aging, though on occasion I found myself a little confused.  However, that is no fault of the author at all, but rather because I was reading so fast and I missed important information.  I was so wrapped up in the story that I had to literally force myself to slow down and reread for clarity in order to understand it all; it’s that engaging, and I highly recommend this thrilling novel to all.  Four stars.

I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This week marks the re-launch of Heather Hildenbrand’s amazing YA fantasy, Across The Galaxy.

Here’s what Heather says about it:

For me, January marked one year as a published author and to mark that, I wanted to do something special to celebrate how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time. I can think of no better way to celebrate than to show some love to the title that got me here in the first place. Across The Galaxy was my first book and as a result, was also my guinea pig in a lot of ways. Through publishing it, I learned so much and met so many awesome bloggers and readers that I am so grateful for that story and for where it took me. For everything it’s given me, I want to give something back to it. (Yes, I realize I’m referring to my book as if it were a real person. Don’t you do that with the characters inside it? Yeah, I’m not the only crazy here.)

So, I found one of the best cover artists EVER and together we came up with a brand new cover that will basically rock your socks. Not sure? Take a minute. Go stare at the new cover and then come back and finish reading. I’ll wait. It’s worth it.

… Now, with a change this big, we aren’t stopping with just a cover reveal. That’s just not enough. So, we’re also doing an e-book giveaway here and another e-book giveaway on every site participating in the “LAUNCH INTO THE GALAXY” Hop this week so be sure to stop everywhere. In addition to THAT, I am also running a giveaway on my publisher’s site at www. Accendopress.com and another one on my personal site at www.heatherhildenbrand.blogspot.com that will include a signed paperback and a very sleek and sexy, leather Kindle cover. Be sure to check that out! And be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you think of the new cover!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Synopsis:

Her parents are dead, her best friend is a horse, and she can’t return to her home planet of Gliese until the Shadows, the monsters who hunt for her, are found and destroyed.

She must find the strength to defeat them, even if it means choosing between victory and the one she
was meant to save…

Interested? Of course you are! I’m offering ONE lucky winner one of these novels:

Many of these novels have recently released. I’ve included my reviews below to help you pick the novel you’d like to win. And honestly, there should be something here for everyone!

This Giveaway is now CLOSED.

Tracey Garvis-Graves is an amazing writer.  Her novel captivated me from beginning to end, and I spent an entire night devouring On The Island because it is a truly beautiful story.  When I finished it, I wasn’t able to sleep or think of anything else besides this incredible novel, and I wanted to share this experience with my readers on the blog as well. Originally I was going to offer two eBook versions of the novel (for international entrants), and one paperback copy (for USA entrants), so that others could read this epic story.  I also contacted Tracey and told her how much I loved her book, and do you know what she did?  Tracey sent me not one, but two signed copies of her amazing novel to be given away on my blog!!! I am in awe of not only Tracey’s sheer writing abilities, but also of her complete generosity to her fans!

So, because Tracey is an indie author, and because I really want to support her as a writer, I have decided that alongside her two signed paperback copies, I’m going to offer FIVE ebook copies to readers as well.  That means we’re giving away a total of SEVEN copies of this novel for a total of four international (ebooks) and three USA (paperback and ebook) winners.
