Books: The Cheapest Vacation You Can Buy

YFrom Goodreads: They call her the DreamKiller.

Silent, stealthy, and above all, accurate, as long as she carries out exactly what her dreams predict. Marlena Gormand kills to protect. Herself. Her way of life. The children at Little Hearts Orphanage. Until she learns these are not the reasons she’s been asked to kill. Not at all.

Azura Mkesky is the headmistress of Little Hearts Orphanage and the only parent-figure Marlena remembers. Azura taught Marlena everything she knows, from her combat skills to her unswerving loyalty to their cause. And Azura has always been there for her. But Azura has a secret. One that she’s used and manipulated Marlena and everyone else in order to protect.

Lukas Hristov knows Azura’s heart is dark—from both personal experience and the visions provided by his Sight. For too long, he’s stood aside while Azura’s reach of power and deception expands. When he can take it no longer and emerges from the shadows, he comes face to face with Marlena. For him, she is where it began. And she is where it ends. He is determined to make this right, to make her believe the truth.

And as the story unravels, Marlena begins to question whose secrets her dreams really protect.

Originally, DreamKiller was released is short installments, with parts one and two releasing over a year ago.  But this Christmas holiday, Heather Hildenbrand completed the final section of this three part story, releasing it in full novella format on December 20, 2012, and I was extremely excited to read it.  As I read parts one and two last year, and reviewed them on the blog, I skimmed over those sections as a refresher, but my main quarry was part three, which is much longer than parts one and two, and just as enjoyable as its predecessors.

What I really like about this novella is that each part is full of action, building up the story and creating suspense.  Part one ends on a cliffhanger, as does part two, but now that all the sections are together in one novella, it’s a rollercoaster ride that keeps getting better and better, and as there’s no downtime between installments anymore, it’s instant gratification at its best.

Did you ever watch the TV series Heroes?  I was in love with that show, mainly because I want to have special powers.  So, of course, every book I come across that mirrors Heroes is a must read for me, and Dreamkiller just so happens to be one of them.  And, as I’ve said before, it was great!  I highly enjoyed the action and learning about each character’s individual abilities, and I enjoyed trying to figure out who was true to their word, and who was lying.  I always enjoy trying to figure out what makes characters tick, and Hildenbrand does a superb job putting readers inside her characters’ heads, especially Luke’s and Marlena’s.

The ending of this novella is great, and it actually leaves the door open for more installments, which is always exciting for readers, especially me.  This is a great read for those of all ages, and if you haven’t read any of Hildenbrand’s work as of yet, I highly suggest starting with this novella.  Four stars.

Another book I was given an extra ARC copy of, while at NCTE in November, is The Rules by Stacey Kade.  It’s the first in the Project Paper Doll series, and I’m excited to read it!!  You might know Kade for her Ghost and the Goth series, which I admit I haven’t read, but it’s been on my radar for quite some time.  So, since I have an extra copy of The Rules, I’m giving it away to my faithful blog readers!

The Rules releases on April 23, 2013

________________________________________________________________________

Synopsis of The Rules, from Goodreads:

1.     Never trust anyone.

2.     Remember they are always searching.

3.     Don’t get involved.

4.     Keep your head down.

5.     Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

princessFrom Goodreads: When Petunia, the youngest of King Gregor’s twelve dancing daughters, is invited to visit an elderly friend in the neighboring country of Westfalin, she welcomes the change of scenery. But in order to reach Westfalin, Petunia must pass through a forest where strange two-legged wolves are rumored to exist. Wolves intent on redistributing the wealth of the noble citizens who have entered their territory. But the bandit-wolves prove more rakishly handsome than truly dangerous, and it’s not until Petunia reaches her destination that she realizes the kindly grandmother she has been summoned to visit is really an enemy bent on restoring an age-old curse.

The stories of Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood get a twist as Petunia and her many sisters take on bandits, grannies, and the new King Under Stone to end their family curse once and for all.

_____________________________________________________

I hope it’s safe to assume that we’ve all heard the fairy tale, “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” by Brothers Grimm, concerning the twelve princesses that must dance all night due to a curse put upon them.  To be honest, I haven’t thought about that fairytale in a long time, not until recently, when I came across Princess of the Silver Woods, by Jessica Day George.  And let me tell you… this is a phenomenal story, twisting a old fairytale with others we so love and cherish—namely, “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Robin Hood.”

Lately I’ve been very taken with fairytales.  I’m not sure if it’s my inner child making its way to the top of the grid, or if I’m just reminiscent, but I’ve begun to really search out fairytales.  I just recently taught “Little Red Riding Hood”to my students, using five different critical approaches to really dive into the story and pull it apart, and it was a blast.  I also recently found the TV series Once Upon A Time, and, though I initially didn’t find it all that enthralling, I kept watching and ended up finishing the entire first season in a weekend.  Then I caught up on the second season as well because I just couldn’t get enough… so, of course, I jumped at the chance to read an ARC of Princess of the Silver Woods.  And boy, was it good!

George has really created an intricate world surrounding the text of the fairytale.  Embellished and detailed, with some amazing paranormal aspects that, in my opinion, take the cake, this story is a true winner.  And I really, really enjoyed it, especially as this novel takes place after the curse of the twelve dancing daughters has been broken—we’re finally given more to the story, just as every little girl has probably tried to surmise upon hearing that “they lived happily ever after,” as most fairy tales so aptly end.  But we’re always interested in the “what happens next” question, and in this case, that’s exactly what George delivers, with a kick, as it were.

Petunia is a great heroine, and I love that she and her sisters have an extremely well rounded relationship.  With eleven sisters, I’d suspect a lot of hatred and betrayal, but these princesses are indeed wonderful, and they’re definitely not foolish, either. Petunia is the youngest, but she has a penchant for intrigue and mystery, and she’s not afraid to fight back when all she loves is in danger.  In fact, none of the sisters are afraid to fight back, though the dancing incident from so long ago has damaged a few in terms of their psyche.  And yet, all the circumstances surrounding them cause them to bond together even more, and I find that extremely refreshing.

Oliver, though pegged as an evil bandit, really is a wonderful young man, and I loved watching him grapple with the idea of saving his family name, or saving the princess Petunia, the daughter of the man who destroyed everything Oliver ever had.  In this good versus evil struggle, we learn much about the powers of magic and the curses true hold, and I found it all extremely intriguing, especially as the many different fairy tales all seem to be morphed together.

Then, imagine my surprise, and delight, to note that this novel is actually the third in a series!  I think the best part about this information is that this novel, Princess of the Silver Woods, stands very well by itself.  George sets everything up to explain itself, and though it alludes to events that have happened in the past, which clued me in that this was indeed a book in a series, it is not mandatory to read the other novels in order to understand what is happening, and that is what I really enjoyed about this novel.  Of course, I will be reading the other books in the series, and have already purchased them from Amazon, and cannot wait until the holidays when I have more time to sit and read them.  I am especially excited because, if I understand correctly, book one, Princess of the Moonlight Ball, chronicles the events from  “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” as we know it, and book two, Princess of Glass, follows the sisters as they travel to different kingdom’s, but also adds in the twist of “Cinderella.”  So, if Princess of the Silver Woods is any indication, then the prequels are going to be just as phenomenal, and I can’t wait to read them!  Five stars.

I’m back from Vegas and the NCTE conference, and I must say, it was an amazing experience.  Likewise, the book vendors present were phenomenal, and they floored me with the amount of free books they were giving away.  I believe I picked up more than 30 novels, most of which were personally signed by the authors!!  I really felt like I died and went to heaven!  One such amazing book vendor was the Hachette Book Group, which gave me TWO ARC copies of Fuse by Julianna Baggott, when they learned I was a book reviewer on top of a teacher.  Seriously, I was floored by all the book vendors’ generosity, and I’m so thankful to be able to share the wealth with my faithful blog readers!  Thus, I am giving away one of the ARCs of Fuse, the second book in the Pure series.  If you haven’t read Pure, check out my review of the novel–Pure has received many mixed reviews because it is, indeed, disturbing, but I really enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to read Fuse!

Lives Will be Lost

Nothing, Will be Forgotten

Chase Williams is a demon hunter in the Circle, or at least he was supposed to be. On his fifteenth birthday, Chase stepped up to the altar to claim his elemental power, but it never came. Elemental magic is passed down to a hunter through the bloodline, but on Chase’s birthday, the bloodline stopped.

Exiled without the Circle’s protection, Chase has spent two years trying to survive a world riddled with half-demons and magic. When he has a run in with a frightened and seemingly innocent demon, he learns the Circle’s agenda has changed: the Circle plans to unlock a portal and unleash pure-blood demons into the world.

Vowing to stop them, and knowing he can’t do it alone, Chase forms a reluctant alliance with Rayna – a sexy witch with an attitude and a secret. In their attempt to stop them however, Chase and Rayna find themselves in the middle of the Circle’s plan, leaving one of them to decide what their friendship is worth, and the other’s life depending on it.

An Excerpt from Exiled:

I’d had several jobs in the past year. This one I’d managed to keep for a few months. Most of my employers frowned on me coming to work with cuts and bruises all the time. It made for “poor presentation,” they’d say. I was thankful it hadn’t interfered with this job, yet.

I finished up my shift and had started my walk home from the burger joint when I felt it. A hunter doesn’t mistake the feeling that demons are around. It moves down your spine and chills your bones. Feeling it proved I was indeed a hunter, even without an element.

The August air was warm for the late hour, and a thick layer of sweat made my white shirt cling to me. I stopped and unzipped my duffle bag, locating the silver dagger inside. Silver was great no matter what you were fighting; it could do serious damage to anything of the Underworld.

The tingle shot down my spine again. If I focused, I could feel each hair on my neck rise. I saw a blur of movement across the street and watched it disappear into a shadowy alley. I moved across the street in a low crouch, resting my weight on the balls of my feet. I slowed my breathing and pulled the dagger from my bag before I slipped around the corner.

My senses were alive and strained to see movement, or hear the sound of feet shuffling against loose rocks. As a hunter, I could see well in the dark, though the only light came from a single flickering street lamp.

I was almost to the end of the alley when it hit. I couldn’t tell what “it” was, but it struck my back and launched me forward. My feet tumbled over my head and my back smashed hard into the concrete wall at the end of the alley. Hands grabbed me and lifted me to my feet, dragging me a few steps before throwing me back the other way. I flew through the air, hit the ground and rolled out into the street.

I used my momentum and came up on one knee to recover. My back burned where pavement had grated the skin off, but I pushed the pain aside as the figure stalked towards me.

“Your death will bring me great glory, hunter. Killing the son of Riley Williams will make me a legend among the Underworld,” the low voice gloated.

“That’s really great, good luck with that,” I said.

He smiled and the fangs that slid down from his gums were long and sharp. His pale skin started to thin as the vampire changed into his demon form.

Milky skin faded into transparent flesh, revealing the moving muscles beneath. Veins ran black through the vampire’s face and limbs, pushing against the thinning clear skin. Strange muscles in his hands pushed bony talons out over his finger nails, and the whites of his eyes disappeared, filling with an inky blackness. The dark orbs stared at me as his fanged mouth curled into a smile, and in a blur he sprang forward, talons swinging.

I ducked as they sliced through the air over my head. I brought the knife up into his stomach and twisted the blade before I pulled it out. Blood spilled onto the ground, but I knew the wound wasn’t enough to kill him. Cut off his head or pierce his black heart – those were my options. I could light him on fire, but I was fresh out of matches.

I brought my foot up and kicked the vampire back to give myself some room. I steadied myself, waiting for him to charge, but his body jerked and the point of a silver blade appeared in his chest before he could move.

The vamp’s body went limp and collapsed, then exploded in a flash of orange light. It burned away into a cloud of ash and littered the pavement, revealing the girl – of all things – who had beaten me to the kill.

Raven hair spilled over her pale shoulders with hints of red highlighting the occasional strand. A tight leather top revealed a sliver of toned stomach and a tease of cleavage. Black pants hugged her hips and long slender legs and met knee-high boots. Her skin glistened in the light, but the most noticeable of her features were her eyes.

Bright green orbs sparkled with an odd glow: demon’s eyes. They had the slit pupils of a cat that I’d never seen on anything other than a house pet or a shifter in animal form. I slipped back into fight mode. I’d never watched one demon kill another, but I suppose for the fame of killing me, why not?

I lunged and threw a punch at her face, but she dodged it with ease.

“You almost messed up my kill,” she snarled, and I had barely enough time to dodge her powerful kick.

“Your kill? You stole it from me!” I swung my fist and hit her stomach. She bent over, winded, before she stepped back and caught her breath, regaining her stance and composure.

“Stole it? Please, I’d been tracking him for blocks.” She spun and caught my chin with the heel of her boot, snapping my head to the side. I rubbed my jaw where she’d hit me and smiled.

“Well then, I guess it’s a good thing I was here to slow him down. Who knows if you would have been able to catch him?”

She moved in for another kick but I was ready. I grabbed her foot and pushed her back. She fell to the ground but quickly came to her feet. “I would have gotten him just fine on my own. Hunting is an art. It would’ve gone on as long as I deemed necessary.”

“Call it hunting if you want, but a filthy demon killing her own kind is still just that: a filthy demon.” I could tell I’d offended her even before she hit me.

My eyes watered when her fist smashed into my nose and her foot connected with my stomach in quick succession. I jerked back to avoid the knee that flew towards my face and pushed it to the side, but she was already moving towards me. Her hands hit my chest hard and I soared through the air for a long moment before I hit the ground. I felt a sharp pain shoot up through my spine and I could hear her laughter as I struggled to my feet.

“I have to admit I expected more from you, Chase, being the infamous son of Riley Williams and all.”

I gripped my dagger until my knuckles turned white and spoke through gritted teeth. “I’ll try not to disappoint.”

My fist hit her jawbone and made a loud crack. I came back with my other hand and wrapped it around her throat. I stepped into the movement and threw her forward in a burst of hunter’s strength. She slammed into the ground but recovered faster than I anticipated. Before I could brace myself she was on top of me.

I pulled her body down and we rolled over each other against the cold concrete until I was on top. I kept a handful of her hair wound tight in my fist and pushed my blade against her throat. “More what you expected?”

“Not really.” She smirked.

I felt the point of a knife pushing against my stomach. Before I could react, a commanding male voice came from behind us.

“Enough!” it boomed.

I didn’t take the knife or my eyes off the demon beneath me.

“But we were just starting to have fun,” she complained. The smile on her face was anything but threatening. If this was her idea of fun, I didn’t want to know what she considered boring.

“Rayna, enough,” the man repeated.

She sighed, sticking out her bottom lip in a pout before the knife left my skin. “Truce?” she said with an innocent face.

“Not a chance,” I replied, pushing the knife harder against her throat.

I was pulled away from Rayna and pressed against a wall, thick hands around my throat. I raised my blade but my opponent blocked and twisted my arm at an awkward angle. The man ripped the blade from my hand and I squirmed.

“Calm down, Chase. We are not here to hurt you,” the voice said. A complete shadow hung around the figure, moving as he moved.

“So she attacked me for fun?” I snapped.

“If we wanted you dead, you would be,” he said, releasing his grip, and I fell to the sidewalk. He stepped back slowly and the shadow peeled itself from his body. As it faded, it revealed a large man whose magic I’d never sensed before.

“If you don’t want to kill me, what do you want?” I asked.

The man reached forward, a large dark arm holding out my dagger. I wrapped my hand around it in confusion. The contrast of our skin was drastic; my pale flesh glowed against his midnight color and the size of his hand alone made me feel small.

“What Rayna told you was true. We were tracking the vampire, not you. Although I’m happy to finally meet you, I’d imagined this moment under different circumstances,” he said.

“There are ways to meet people besides attacking them.”

“I agree. You must forgive us; Rayna is quick to lash out when insulted.” My eyes met his and I couldn’t read his expression. I knew I hadn’t been polite, but I wasn’t about to apologize to a demon. “You know, your father would not have hesitated to kill her, no matter his position.”

“Congratulations, you’ve discovered I’m not my father. What the hell would you know about him anyways?”

He turned his head to the side and as the light hit his neck it revealed a tattoo. It was the one every hunter received after their ceremony. The one I never got.

The tattoo made me realize why he could bend the shadows; he was an air elemental and a powerful one at that. I had heard stories of hunters being able to work with shadows, but I’d never seen it done firsthand.

I looked him over, not sure what to think of a hunter working with a demon. He was taller than me by an inch, around six-foot three. His head was smooth shaven, though there was a small patch of hair under his lower lip. His skin seemed like a smooth dark chocolate. His body was large and square, broad shoulders making him a massive column of strength and power. He filled out a sharp black suit jacket and wore black loafers, leaving the only color on him a flash of bright blue dress shirt.

“You’re a hunter.”

“Once upon a time, yes I was.”

He broke eye contact and cleared his throat, extending his massive hand towards me. “Look at my manners. Let me introduce myself. I am Marcus Starkraven.”

My eyebrows shot up; I knew that name! “You’re supposed to be dead.”

“Is that what you heard?”

“You used to hunt with my father.”

He nodded slightly, but otherwise ignored the comment. “You already met Rayna,” he said, taking his unshaken hand back.

I looked at Rayna and got caught in the depths of her green, slit eyes.

“What are you doing with a demon?” I said, spitting out the last word like a curse.

“How’s your nose?” Rayna asked.

I touched it and looked at the blood on my fingers. “Lucky shot.”

She chuckled and stepped towards me. “Care to go again?” Marcus put an arm in front of her.

“Not what we’re doing right now,” he said.

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“She is my student. And my friend.”

I couldn’t respond. I didn’t believe it. A hunter being friends with a demon was unfathomable.

“I would have thought, being out in the real world, you’d have come to understand, Chase. Some Underworlders don’t fit the Circle’s black and white image of good and evil,” he said.

“The only Underworlders I’ve come across have tried to kill me.”

“Your name is feared by many in the Underworld. Your father has created quite the reputation for himself, so they fear you as well,” Marcus said.

I smirked. “As they should.”

He shook his head. “That wasn’t a compliment.

From Goodreads: Held hostage by Jack Seth, Kiera Hudson must not only find a way to escape, but save Potter and her father before she turns to stone. With Jack becoming ever more unstable and dangerous, Kiera soon realises the choice he is forcing her to make has far more terrifying consequences than she first believed.

As Jack’s past begins to unravel, Kiera finally understands what turned him into a serial killer, and how his disturbing past affects her future…

_________________________________________________________

Wow!  This book left me speechless.  Here we have the infamous Jack Seth, evil beyond comparison, divulging his poignant and often times gut wrenching side of the story.  His is one of heartache, betrayal, and lies, all of which molded him into the convicted killer that he is so unashamed of being.  And though Kiera hated to admit it, and though I didn’t want to, either, his story made me really feel for him.  Though he’s been a terror to Kiera, Potter, Murphy, and the whole rest of the gang, there is actually a reason he turned out to be who he is today, and though he is a terrifying monster, his heart wasn’t always this way.

As I read this story, I was extremely excited because I believed I’d figured out O’Rourke’s plot prior to the big reveal.  But, O’Rourke always hits the reader with an exceptional bout of twists that leave them reeling, and that’s exactly what happened in this novel as well.  I should have known that the foreshadowing would only allow me to see a small piece of the puzzle, but I really thought I had it all figured out.  And, though I had the main gist correct, never, in a million years, did I see any of the other connections O’Rourke makes coming.  Truth be told, I was floored, once again. It amazes me just how intricate and perfect O’Rourke’s stories turn out to be, and I can’t fathom how he is able to keep surprising his readers with new information as the plot thickens, but it’s his gift, and I love him for it. Dead Seth is another amazing novel in the Kiera Hudson series and I highly suggest you pick up the series today.  You won’t be disappointed!  Five stars.

I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

From Goodreads: Maxine “Max” Compton is in detention when the outbreak starts; so are several other students when Max’s best friend Brie storms in – chomping on the thigh bone of their favorite Home Ec teacher, Ms. Watkins!

Brie is a zombie and quickly starts biting everyone in the room—even her best friend, Max!  When the class realizes what happens, it’s too late; they are all zombies—and they’re no longer alone. Now a thin gray man in a white lab coat is testing them; making them read, and once they can no longer read, the zombies are led from the room, never to be seen again. One by one the zombies stop reading, all but a few of them, Max included. Oh, and that cute thug she’s been crushing on for years, Zander Cash! That’s when Max learns that there are good zombies, and bad zombies. And if she’s to survive, she has to pick a side.

Who knew Detention could be this hard… or last forever?

Fischer is back with his latest zombie tale, and it’s another winner!  I really enjoyed getting to know Max, especially as she and her “friends” struggled to maintain their humanity in after being unceremoniously turned into zombies.

I think what I like best about Fischer’s writing is that it’s unique.  He doesn’t follow the traditional zombie lore, and he’s fantastically funny in his telling of events.  Though the novel is set in detention, there is so much more to the story than that, and I found the story extremely intriguing as I read.  From the epic zombie apocalypse over the school TV system, to the daring escape from the school and into the unknown, I found myself drawn into the story and rooting for the zombies—for the ones who still had brain function, that is.

Call me morbid, but I really enjoyed the tazing and zombie reactions in the beginning of the novel.  Of course, I felt terrible for the zombies, until they became the true undead versions we’re used to, but then it was like, taze that zombie!  Get ‘em!  And yet, the zombies that still have functions kind of break your heart and you can’t help but root for them.  And, of course, nothing is what it seems, so as I read the novel and thought I knew what was going on, Fischer kept blindsiding me with revelations that I never saw coming.

Now, truth be told, I didn’t connect with all the characters in the novel, and parts of it were a bit more fast paced than I would have like, but overall, this is a true gem and the perfect read for Halloween.  Like I said, Max was really cool, and I think, perhaps, there is room for a sequel, which means more character development, and I would love that!  Four stars.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The Author of Detention of the Living Dead Interviews Its Heroine, Max Compton

By Rusty Fischer, author of Zombies Don’t Cry

Maxine “Max” Compton is just sitting in Detention one day — so totally not her fault — when her best friend Brie Cunningham walks in and turns everyone in the room into zombies.

Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Well, now to share her side of the story for the very first time, and ONLY on the A Book Vacation blog, I interview Max about her experiences in my new YA paranormal, Detention of the Living Dead:

Mr. Fischer: Hi Max, I gotta ask, what’s it like having a boy’s name?

Max: Hi, Mr. Fischer. Well, it didn’t start out as a boy’s name. Maxine is about as girly a name as you could get, but it always sounded a little too “church lady” for me so I shortened it to “Max.” It’s okay, actually; I’m kind of a tomboy anyway.

Mr. Fischer: Do you think that’s what helped you survive what happened to you in that Detention room?

Max: Not really. I think wanting to survive helped me survive. Being a boy or girl didn’t really enter into it. When it comes to living or dying, it’s what you’ve got deep down inside that really counts.

Mr. Fischer: That’s a good point, Max. What did you know about zombies before, sorry, becoming one?

Max: Just what I saw in the movies and on TV. You know, rotting limbs and popping out of graves and “bbbrraaaiiinnnssss!” I never knew there were different types, or that they could talk or think, or that there would be zombie cops.

Mr. Fischer: Do you think things might have gone differently if you’d been, say, in an after school club meeting when the outbreak started, as opposed to Detention?

Max: Ha! What, like Math-a-Lete zombies would be less gross than Detention zombies? I pretty much think that zombies are zombies, regardless of how they start out. Do I wish I’d stayed home from school that day? Yes, but if it was gonna happen, it was gonna happen whether or not I was in Detention or Yearbook club.

Mr. Fischer: Really? You don’t think bad people get worse when they become zombies?

Max: And what, good zombies get better? Just look at what happened to Brie. She was a really good, sweet, kind person before and then… well, not so much. And yet some of those kids in detention, the ones I thought were so tough and hard and even “bad,” turned out to be better than the rest. I think it’s just the luck of the draw.

Mr. Fischer: So, you feel “lucky” to be a good zombie?

Max: Far from it. I’d rather be a bad human than a good zombie any day.

Mr. Fischer: Really? But you’re so strong now, can’t feel pain, don’t need to sleep. There’s not a little part of you that secretly likes being a super zombie?

Max: Not even a tiny little bit. Try it someday and you’ll know what I mean.

Mr. Fischer: NO thanks, I’d rather just write about them. But you bring up a good point: Why do you think people are so fascinated with zombies these days?

Max: I wasn’t. Not really. I mean, I was in a general way, the way kids are into vampires and werewolves but I know what you mean; a lot of my friends were zombie fanatics. Now, a lot of my friends are zombies, period.

Mr. Fischer: So, Max, not to give too much away for folks who haven’t read the book yet, but… what does the future hold for you and the other survivors?

Max: I plan on finding out how the outbreak started. Who started it, when and why, and then tracking them down and doing really bad things to them.

Mr. Fischer: Really? So it’s all about revenge now.

Max: Yeah, it pretty much is.

Mr. Fischer: What’s your biggest regret about your “before life”? By that I mean, the life you led before you became a zombie?

Max: I guess that I just didn’t appreciate what it meant to be alive, to be truly alive, before. Smelling my cup of coffee in the morning, taking a breath of fresh air, sleep! I’ll miss all of those things, but the things I’ll miss the most aren’t things, really; they’re people.

Mr. Fischer: Speaking of people, if you could say anything to your Dad right now, what would it be?

Max: Hold on, Dad; I’m coming back for you!

Thanks, Max, for coming to life just this once to let me ask you all these questions! And thanks, Shana, and all your readers at A Book Vacation, for letting me share Max’s interview with you!

Yours in YA,

Rusty

L.B. Schulman, author of League of Strays, has graciously stopped by the blog today to talk a little bit about psychopaths as one of her main characters, Kade, is indeed a scary psychopath. Check out what she has to say:

L.B.’s Top Ten List: Do You Know a Psychopath?

First let me say: I’m a writer, not a psychologist, but researching my character, Kade Harlin, I learned a lot about the common traits of psychopaths, which stem from their lack of conscience. Not all of these characteristics may fit a single person, but if most do, then you may have a psychopath on your hands. Since only 1 in 10 are female, I will use the pronoun “he” in the questions that follow.

1. Do your friends think he’s arrogant, even though he seems charming to you?

Psychopaths often alienate their partners from their previous support systems. Friends and family members are the first to see the problem.

2. Does he lie often?

3. Has all his previous relationships been short-term?

Psychopaths have trouble making relationships last unless their partners provide them with a critical need. They get bored easily, so they often cheat, while being possessively jealous of their partner’s interactions with the outside world.

4. Did he have a lot of behavioral problems when he was young?

Psychopaths are born this way, not created. The signs show up early.

5. Does he give you exactly what you need from the very beginning?

If you are lonely, he provides great companionship. If you need a father figure, he becomes one. Psychopaths are chameleons. They target your specific needs and seem to fulfill them, at least at the start of a relationship.

6. Does he waffle between being excessively critical to super-sweet?

To keep a partner hooked, the psychopath will “make up” for his negative behavior.

7. Does he enjoy pity parties?

For himself, that is. He has many sob stories, and he can cry easily when it’s needed. He looks for especially kind, empathetic people who will be swayed by his tales of woe.

8. Does he get bored easily?

Psychopaths have an aversion to routine living. When bored, he will typically move on or become irresponsible. He may need constant stimulation, translating to extreme risk-taking activities.

9. Does he show a lack of guilt or remorse when he behaves poorly, or a lack of empathy at the world’s problems?

10. Does he have a terrible temper that grows worse over time?

Psychopaths starts out with lavish compliments and end up highly-critical, even taking their insults public. They have a tendency to move toward abuse. If you’ve already reached this stage with a partner, seek help immediately to extricate yourself from the relationship!

From Goodreads: The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1: Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem–staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

_____________________________________________________

I have to say that I really enjoyed Half-Blood.  For me, the idea of gods and mortals is really enticing, and I love reading about special powers within specialty schools, and good versus evil.  Of course, after having read Daimon, I was completely in love with this story before I even began, and Armentrout doesn’t disappoint in this first full book of the series.

I still love Alex dearly.  Sure, she makes some really stupid mistakes, but don’t we all at her age?  She’s recently: watched her mother die a terrible death, been hunted down by daimons, saved by the sexy Aiden, forced back to the Covenant still not knowing why her mother forced her to run from it in the first place… and now she “stands trial” for things she never had control over in the first place.  Not only does she have to prove herself to the elders, worst of all her stepdad, but also to Aiden, her new trainer.  Seriously, if I were in her shoes, I’d probably be a bungling idiot in hysterics.  But Alex takes it all in stride.  She’s seen a lot in her few short years, and it’s only made her stronger.  And yet, she does have a softer side. She’s never been in love, and with Aiden, her first crush, of course things are going to go awry. While her “I don’t need anyone” attitude does grate the nerves a bit after a while, watching her begin to grow as an individual was really nice.  Alex’s close friends were a riot, too, and I think they really helped make the story come together in a way that many readers will love.  There is much kinship, even though Alex has been MIA for three years, and I loved watching her get reacquainted and work herself to the bone to remain a part of the Covenant.

Aiden, as sexy as he is, definitely stole my heart, and I truly enjoyed every scene he was in (which is most).  He’s kind and compassionate, yet steadfast and hardcore.  One of the highest ranked Sentinel’s, he’s got a keen sense for danger and protecting those around him, which makes him the perfect man, in my opinion.  Hence, I can’t wait to dive into the sequel, Pure, and see what awaits him and Alex in their next endeavor.

Aside from the main characters, though, I really enjoyed the plot.  I wasn’t expecting the many twists and turns and I highly enjoyed being along for the ride.  The revelations brought to the forefront were also really entertaining and, like I said, I can’t wait to read the sequel.  Four stars.

I purchased my Kindle and Paperback copies from Amazon.

From Goodreads: When eighteen-year-old Winter McCall is offered a chance to leave her life of poverty behind on the streets of London, she moves to a remote part of the South West of England. Here she takes up the job as housekeeper to the young and handsome, yet mysterious, Thaddeus Blake.

Warned that he has some curious habits, Winter soon realises that not all is as it firsts appears at the remote mansion where she now lives and works.

Blind to the real danger that she is in, Winter finds herself becoming attracted to Thaddeus, and with nowhere and no one to run to, she slowly succumbs to his strange requests. But none of them are as strange as asking Winter to stand each night in the moonlight.

____________________________________________________

In the wee hours of the morning, Tim O’Rourke released his latest novel, Moonlight, a new series that he’s had under wrap and key, only recently announcing its upcoming release to his fan base.  Highly exuberant about any new release of O’Rourke’s, I set aside my vast reading pile to swoop in and devour this enticing story of Winter and Thaddeus.  And once again, O’Rourke does not disappoint.

Winter—aka. Winnie—is homeless, living on the streets of London just trying to survive day by day.  Thaddeus, a poet with a massive house and odd sleeping habits, is a lonely young man looking for someone to help with the burden of his home.  Or, so he says when he approaches Winnie with the opportunity of a lifetime.  Of course, not all is what it seems, as Winnie soon discovers, and I absolutely loved sleuthing around beside her as I read, trying to piece together the puzzles within the novel and figure it out before all was revealed.  I failed, of course.  Every time I thought I knew what was happening, a new twist would arise, forcing me to change my predictions, over and over again.  It turns out that I was technically right the first time I assumed something about the characters, but only partially, and I love how O’Rourke can cause me to second-guess myself as I read.  Any novel that keeps me on my toes is amazing, in my opinion, and so far, every single one of O’Rourke’s books have done it.  Every. Single. One.  Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of a truly gifted writer.  O’Rourke simply amazes me.

Winnie is a great character, and for those of you who have read O’Rourke’s Kiera Hudson series, I’d say she definitely rivals Kiera—neck and neck.  (Haven’t read the Kiera Hudson Series?  What are you waiting for?  Do. It.)  I really enjoyed Winnie’s candid, no-nonsense personality, and as she began to suspect that things were very wrong, her bravado and spunk really endeared her to my heart.  Though I didn’t agree with all her choices, in the end, I believe she did exactly as she should.

Thaddeus is, of course, an amazing character.  His nearly bi-polar personality was scary to watch, and his cagey responses to Winnie’s questions kept me on edge throughout the novel.  Of course, I was convinced he was worse than Jack the Ripper as I read (is he?  Read and find out…), so my fear for Winnie was palpable throughout the novel, especially as the truth unfolded and the characters were left with some dire choices to make.

Now, while there is a cliffhanger of sorts at the end, one of the things I love so much about O’Rourke’s writing is that he generally closes each novel very neatly.  As the reader, I know there is more to come, but the main concerns within this novel have been address very well, and though I’m dying to get my hands on the sequel already, I am content with the wait as O’Rourke didn’t leave many loose ends, as so many novels do, nowadays.  Also, I know O’Rourke writes extremely quickly, and I won’t have to wait a whole year for the sequel, so… that’s another plus.

Overall, this is a fantastic new series and if you haven’t read any of O’Rourke’s work to date, then this is the perfect one with which to begin.  There is some language usage within the novel, but otherwise the story is relatively clean, save some descriptive horror scenes, but even those were miniscule and didn’t make me squeamish.  I’d recommend this for readers aged 15 and above, especially those who like a good mystery.  Five stars.

I received a copy of this amazing novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

From Goodreads: Julia has been ripped from the escape she’d planned for herself. When she awakens to discover that her reality has shifted to include a supposed soul-meld with a man she hates… and who hates her, she rebels. Julia doesn’t want to be Queen of the Blood Singers if it means captivity in a gilded cage.

Broken from the horrific events surrounding her friends, Cynthia migrates to the very city that Julia resides in and determines to find her as the police follow the bread crumbs she left in her wake. Detective Truman’s discovery at her apartment exposed her departure for the escape it was.

The Feral has come full circle and must begin a new life from the shadow of the old. His placement in the hierarchy of the pack is uncertain when he finds that he has an integral enemy already in place and a pack member to protect. While he desperately seeks answers to what had been… what could be.

Can the vestiges of Julia’s former life be restored so she might reunite with her one true love or has that door closed forever because of supernatural circumstances beyond their control?

_______________________________________________

Did you read that synopsis?  Did you?  Because it’s amazing.  I love how Blodgett is able to create different stories that continuously evolve within her novels, all destined to meet at the climactic point of the story, intertwining it all together and leaving the reader breathless.  While they seem removed from one another, the story breaking from one character’s plight to the next, Blodgett always brings it together so seamlessly and I absolutely love her books.  Especially this one.  With Julia working hard to remain in control and choose her own path, Cynthia wandering the streets, hiding from the weres and looking for her best friend, Jason attempting to get back his mate, and Scott attempting to ignore his bond, the novel unfolds impossibly fast, whisking the reader away on a supernatural ride that is sure to please.

In this novel, three supernatural groups take the forefront and Blodgett does a phenomenal job making them extremely real.  The weres, lacking females and a softer side, are intent on mating with Julia as they believe the bond will allow them to shift without the need of the moon.  Likewise, the meek, though duty bound Blood Singers believe Julia to be the Queen they have waiting a millennia for, highly gifted and meant to bond with one of their Blood Singers to strengthen her powers and awaken as their protector against those who would harm them.  And the vampires, dangerous in their own right, especially to one another, believe Julia will allow them to live amongst the daylight, no longer forced to walk the earth at night.  Of all these groups, I find the Blood Singers to be the most interesting, not only because Julia is one of them, but because it’s a completely unique paranormal group with extraordinary powers that readers won’t find in most novels.

Julia, of course, is still my favorite. I love her strong personality and will power, attempting to do what is right, but also remain true to herself.  I can’t imagine being told that I was bonded with a certain person and that was it, even if I did have a strong pull towards them, and I love that Blodgett keeps the reader guessing  who Julia will end up with throughout the entire novel: William, the kind, compassionate vampire that shares her blood and truly cares for her… Jason, her husband turned feral by the unforgiving weres, or Scott, her destined mate according to the Blood singers… only time will tell.  Five stars.

I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I’m really excited to say that Heather Hildenbrand’s characters from the Dirty Blood Series, Wes and Alex, were able to stop by the blog today and give us a little insight concerning what they think about each other… and boy is it interesting!  Check it out below:

Wes says: Okay, here’s the thing. I’m gonna’ say some stuff about Alex. I mean, I have a strong opinion on this subject, and I’m not gonna lie about it today, even though I try to hold back as much as I can when Tara’s around. Hell, even when she’s not around I hold back. But the thing is he saved her life. Twice. Damn … twice. I forgot about that second time. You know, with those rogue wolves when she was supposedly meeting Miles so he could make her his hybrid concubine? *rolls eyes* Don’t get me started on that asinine plan. This is Tara we’re talking about. Have you met her? If there’s danger, she’ll find it. If there isn’t, she’ll create it just so she can jump into it.

So, Alex. He saved her. Twice. And I can’t discount that, much as I want to. I bite my tongue a lot. Nod and smile, you know? Because aside from saving her ass, there’s the fact that she cares about him. God knows why. He’s horrible for her. Always letting her rush into dangerous situations, never putting her safety first. He’s careless. Even if he saved her, there’s the fact that he let it get to the point where she needed saving. He should’ve been more careful.

As for his feelings for her, I don’t know. He probably thinks he loves her, but he’s a kid. Sure he’s only a year younger than me but he’s still a kid as far as I’m concerned. He’s never led anything. And he’s not worthy of Tara. It’s my own fault, really. You think I don’t know that? I left her alone at that school. I should’ve been there, but I had responsibilities back home. To Jack. To Fee. To all of them. Still, I should’ve been there. I can see that now, can see where I screwed it up. If I could go back … well, I can’t. I can only keep trying to make it right.

If she were to choose him? *runs hand through hair* I know the right answer would be to let him have her, to bow out gracefully and all that mess, but if we’re being honest—and I promised I would be—if she chose him … I’d kill him in his sleep. And I wouldn’t feel bad about it later.

I love Tara Godfrey. *growls* She’s mine.

________________________________________________________________________

Alex says: You want to know what I think of Wesley St. John, huh? I think if it weren’t for a certain brown-eyed girl we could be friends. *smirks* Not! I’d probably have killed him by now. *shrugs.* But that’s my job, nothing personal.

Now it’s personal, though. Because of her. Hell, why did she have to be so, so … amazing? I think it makes it worse she doesn’t even know it. *shakes head*

Right. Wes. We’re talking about him. You want my honest opinion? The guy’s insecure. He’s always trying to control her or tell her what to do. He’s scared to let her be her own person. Especially when it comes to anything remotely dangerous. Tara’s a tough girl. I should know. I trained with her every day at Wood Point, and she can handle herself better than he thinks. He doesn’t give her any credit for that stuff—or let her make her own decisions. If he would loosen up … well, hopefully, he doesn’t, because that would mean I have a shot. He’s risking everything by not backing her up, not letting her run her own life. I can see it in her. She’s not going to take much more of that. And when she’s had enough, I’ll be here … waiting.

About Heather Hildenbrand:

Heather Hildenbrand was born and raised in a small town in northern Virginia where she was homeschooled through high school. She now lives in coastal VA, a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean, with her husband and two adorable children. She works from home, part time, as a property manager and when she’s not furiously pounding at the keyboard, or staring off into space whilst plotting a new story, she’s helping her husband with DIY projects in their home (he woodworks – she paints) or she’s lying on the beach, soaking in those delicious, pre-cancerous rays.

Heather loves Mexican food, hates socks with sandals, and if her house was on fire, the one thing she’d grab is her DVR player.

You can find out more about her and her books at http://heatherhildenbrand.blogspot.com/
