Misunderstandings by Tiffany King

A Woodfalls Girls Novel

MisunderstandingsIf you’ve read Misunderstandings by the amazing Tiffany King, a phenomenal novel that released this past Tuesday, then you already know that it’s full of amazing characters.  And I do mean amazing!  While I love the self-assured personality of Melissa, the swoonworthy, brooding personality of Justin, the flamboyant personality of Tressa, and the cool collected personality of Rob, I am indeed #TeamBrittni all the way. Why? Because we are so similar!

Out of all her friends, Brittni is the cautious one. She’s an overanalyzing, skeptical, glass half-empty, suffer in silence, proud young woman. While it’s true she’s made mistakes in her past, as have we all, she’s always been extremely careful with her choices, atoning for her mistakes in silence instead of flaunting apologies or explanations for the world to see. She doesn’t back down or grovel, neither does she call others out on their errors or misconceptions, even though she wants to, and probably should…

Brittni is not as flamboyant of inappropriate as her best friend Tressa (sometimes Tressa really makes me blush); neither is she as assertive as her bestie college friend, Melissa. Instead, Brittni owns an extremely dry sense of humor—which not everyone gets, but those that do find hilarious—and she’s scared to death of elevators and small spaces in general…

“A small crowd of people hurried onto one of the elevators as the doors slid open. I declined to join the overflowing box, waiting instead for the next elevator, which would be less crowded. Being closed in with a group of strangers wouldn’t cut it for me. I couldn’t stand being in confined spaces anyway, but elevators and I had a hate/hate kind of relationship. I hated them, and if the seventh-grade handcrushing incident was any indication, they hated me too.”

And this sounds so much like me it’s uncanny, making my connection with Brittni instantaneous. And while I certainly did judge her as I read—as we all do—she is an incredibly strong, amazing young woman.

Fun fact: Tiffany King is really the one who is scared of elevators, and she’s projected this fear onto Brittni in Misunderstandings. When she was 13, Tiffany’s hand was crushed in an elevator door, breaking all her fingers—and to this day, she still hasn’t forgiven that beast of an elevator.

So–who’s your favorite character?  Do you love Brittni as much as I do, or are you a #TeamJustin, #TeamRob, #TeamMelissa, or #TeamTressa kind of person?

About Misunderstandings:10153156_490036451125232_6861417627572096135_n

From Goodreads: Just when she thought things were going up…

Two years after a devastating breakup, Brittni Mitchell has moved on from Justin Avery—or so she tells herself. But when she returns to Seattle for her best friend’s engagement party, Brittni finds herself the victim of a disastrously timed elevator breakdown. She’s trapped with the last person she wants to face, and forced to recount the past she desperately wants to forget.

She’s going to have to look back…

When Brittni left her podunk hometown for a big city college experience at the University of Washington, hooking up with a guy like Justin Avery was not part of her plan. Between Justin’s attention-grabbing tattoos, cigarette smoking, and bad boy attitude Brittni quickly chalked him up as “Mr. Wrong.” But his charm was unrelenting, and Brittni’s decision to give Justin a chance quickly turned into the worst choice she ever made.

So that she might be able to move forward.

Now she’s stuck with Justin—literally—and the complicated web of misunderstandings that tied up the truth for two years is about to unravel.
